You should understand the following:
the functions and structure of government
the roots of American government and the philosophies that guided its development
who the American people are and how they are changing
the political culture and the characteristics of American democracy
the changing characteristics of the American people (such as age, racial make-up and ethnic composition)
the political ideologies of Americans and how they affect government policy
how Americans view their government and the role it plays in their lives
